LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The Age Newspaper

Last week’s media reports, including those in The Age, have suggested ABC Managing Director Jonathon Shier and management are contemplating running the ABC’s Melbourne news bulletin out of Sydney. This is not acceptable to the Victorian members of the alternative Federal Government – nor the Victorian public. The idea that local Melbourne or Victorian news bulletins could be reported in a Sydney based bulletin is simply a ‘slap in the face’ to millions of taxpayers in this state who pay their “8 cents a day”. It is evident from the commercial television networks weekend coverage that Sydney-based bulletins result in local stories, often more important to Victorians, simply not being covered. Mr Shier and ABC news management will apparently consider this move because, to quote Mr Shier, “it would save millions”. One might ask, what is the point of spending millions on an institution like the ABC if a substantial number of viewers, namely the population of Victoria, do not see news relevant to them. We simply cannot believe that even Federal Liberals and Nationals from Victoria would tolerate the ABC’s newsroom turned into the Sydney Broadcasting Corporation.
